Volunteering Volunteers make NBCR what it is. Our
volunteers are a wonderful group of caring, compassionate,
professional women and men. Most have full-time jobs. Everyone is
very appreciative of one another and just wants what is best for our
kitties. Our goal is to save as many kitties as we can and help find
them the homes they all deserve. (Download
a Volunteer Application.) Although there is
not a lot of turnover, there's always more work to do. If
you'd like to volunteer your time, here are the categories of
activities where we could use the help. Cage
Cleaners This is always the biggest need. Cage
cleaners help keep the adoption center looking great. We have a cage
cleaner come in every morning and every afternoon or evening.
Each time you come, you clean each cage one at a time, let the kitty
out to exercise while you are cleaning, give them fresh food and
water, scoop their litter box, and shake out their beds. We train
each person for this position. You are free to come in whenever you
like within PetSmart's hours. Most morning cage cleaners tend to
come in before 11:00 a.m. and the afternoon/evening cage cleaners
come in after 5:00 p.m. It's not the easiest job, but it has
its rewards. You get one-on-one time with the kitties and who
appreciates a clean environment as much as a cat?
Fosters Foster
parents take cat(s) into their home on a temporary basis. There are
several reasons fosters are needed including giving a kitty a break
from PetSmart, giving the kitty more socialization, caring for
nursing mothers and kittens or weaned kittens not yet ready for
adoption, or housing a cat until a cage opens up at PetSmart. For
more details on fostering and our requirements, see the
Fostering page.
Adoption Counselors Adoption Counselors help find
the kitties good homes. There are two adoption counselors scheduled
every Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Counselors interview each
person by talking to them and helping them find the right cat for
their lifestyle/family. If they meet all of the adoption
requirements, the counselor guides the adopter in paperwork
completion and makes arrangements for the cat to be taken home.
Training is required for this position and ask that you work a shift
or two with a more seasoned adoption counselor before scheduling you
for your first official shift. Adoption Counselors also maintain the
cages throughout the shift and play with the cats during slow times.
Transporters Transporters help transport cats
between the adoption center and the vet. Other times we may
need someone to pick up a kitty or two from another shelter or from
a foster. Transporting is not a routine opportunity, it's just as
they need arises. We will usually send out an e-mail to all of our
volunteers to see if anyone can fill the request.
Also Needed We also need people who can pick up,
launder, and return the bedding. If you want to
volunteer, please complete and submit our
Volunteer Application Form. The
volunteer coordinator will contact you to arrange an interview.
