Summer 2008 Newsletter

Welcome to Fuzzy Tales!

Dear Friends,

Even with the economy in flux, NBCR has adopted out more cats than last year at this time. We’ve had a few returns, but not as many as we were expecting. Thank goodness! In this edition of the newsletter, read about our ideas to raise money, what has happened with Mocha and Marmalade (our two blind rescues), the generosity of our volunteers and supporters, and new board members.

We’ve have added two new members, Dache Barnhart and Sarah Berglass. Both have volunteered with our group for some time.

In addition to working adoptions, cage cleaning, and laundry, Dache is coordinating and training all new volunteers.  Dache and her husband adopted a handsome, Siamese adult named Montana from Stacy Bauer.  Stacy followed up with Dache after the adoption and shared the volunteer opportunities with our group.  Dache chose to volunteer with our group because of our dedicated and passionate volunteers.  Dache is a systems engineer for Raytheon and has since adopted two more adults from our group.

Sarah works adoptions, fosters newborn kittens, and has created a training manual for our adoption counselors.  She adopted an eight-week old kitten — not from us! — and the kitten turned out to be extremely sick. She didn’t know where to start and since Sarah had met me a few weeks before, she contacted me for advice.  “Not only did Angela give me advice, she emailed me articles about my new kitten and followed up consistently via phone calls and emails for the next few weeks to make sure that my new kitten was healthy and happy,” said Sarah. Sarah learned about NBCR’s dedication to the health and happiness of the cats and kittens in our charge while talking with me.  She was also impressed with our dedication to finding cats and kittens appropriate homes and our willingness to turn down potential adopters to ensure the welfare of the cats. Sarah works with the Autism Treatment Center as manager of behavioral services.

This has been a really busy year for NBCR!  It has been very rewarding to rescue cats scheduled for euthanasia at Garland Animal Services (GAS) and finding them loving homes. In 2007, we saved 77 cats from being put to sleep at GAS. So far in 2008, we have saved 109 from GAS and 11 from other municipal shelters. We have adopted out 230 cats through the end of July. The adoption of Jet and Lex this week marks the last two cats from our old waitlist - yipee! We plan to keep working hard through December and have another successful year.

Warm regards,

Angela Corley, President and Co-Founder
